Southern California Wildflower Conditions - May 2026
The main spring wildflower season in Southern California has now passed peak. Scattered patches of mariposa lily, sacred datura, California buckwheat, summer lupine, bush lupine, and California poppies can still be found in some higher hillsides and protected canyons. If you're lucky, you may even spot beautiful patches of Summer Snow.

Southern California Wildflower Season & Best Viewing
Wildflowers typically bloom from February through May, with peak often in March to April depending on rainfall and temperatures. In good years, hillsides transform in a myriad of purple lupine, California poppies, goldfields, and other rare wildflower displays that inspire my photography.
Factors Shaping the 2026 Bloom
Heavy precipitation (15 to 25+ inches in many areas) from cold storms triggered strong germination, though a January dry spell and recent heat have influenced duration. Mild early temps helped, but blooms are fading faster now emphasizing the fleeting, ephemeral nature of these scenes.
