- What I liked: Outstanding four-way stretch, fits great, extremely durable DURALUX fabric that feels soft yet tough and very comfortable, excellent UPF 50+ sun protection, quick-drying, and generous pockets that actually fit a phone, keys, and snacks comfortably.
- What I didn't like: They're a bit more expensive than budget options, and the waistband can feel a bit tight when brand new (after eating too many oreo cookies but it breaks in nicely after a few wears).
- Best for: Landscape photographers, serious hikers, and anyone who spends long active days scrambling, crouching, and moving through rugged terrain.
Patagonia Quandary pants review
If you prioritize lightweight gear and environmental responsibility, the Patagonia Quandary is a strong contender. They are great especially for ultralight backpacking trips and they shine when weight matters most. The recycled fabric is surprisingly breathable on hot days and the fit is clean and modern. - What I liked: Very light, excellent breathability, eco-friendly materials, and comfortable for all-day wear.
- What I didn't like: Less four-way stretch than the KUHL Renegade, so they feel a bit more restrictive when scrambling or crouching for photos. They also wear faster on abrasive rock.
- Best for: Ultralight backpackers and hikers who value sustainability.
REI Co-op Trailmade pants review
The REI Co-op Trailmade pants are a solid budget option that punch above their weight for beginners and casual hikers. I've worn them on several shorter day hikes and they deliver decent comfort and performance for the price. Shop REI Trailmade Pants
- What I liked: Affordable, comfortable straight fit, lightweight, and surprisingly good pockets for the cost.
- What I didn't like: Noticeably less stretch and durability than the KUHL or Patagonia. They are usually baggier and not as fitted but they do the job. After a few rough outings they started showing wear and tear faster than I'd like.
- Best for: Beginners, casual hikers, or anyone on a tight budget who still wants decent trail performance.

My personal recommendation
If I could only keep one pair of hiking pants for the rest of my photography adventures, it would be the KUHL Renegade. The stretch, fitted tapered look, durability, sun protection, and comfortable fabric feel are unmatched for long active days on the trail. Like I said I own five pairs.
