Best hiking pants for 2026: KUHL Renegade tested vs Patagonia & REI

Field-tested across Patagonia, Death Valley, Utah and the Sierra Nevada with my honest feedback, pros, cons, and prices. I am pretty brutal with my pants along with tripods. For me it's all about comfort, ruggedness and feeling good.

KUHL Renegade pants review

The KUHL Renegade is my go-to hiking pant and the one I reach for most often on photography trips. After years of real-world use, it has proven to be the best all-around performer for me. I own 5 pairs. Shop KUHL Renegade

Patagonia Quandary pants review

If you prioritize lightweight gear and environmental responsibility, the Patagonia Quandary is a strong contender. They are great especially for ultralight backpacking trips and they shine when weight matters most. The recycled fabric is surprisingly breathable on hot days and the fit is clean and modern. REI Co-op Trailmade pants review

The REI Co-op Trailmade pants are a solid budget option that punch above their weight for beginners and casual hikers. I've worn them on several shorter day hikes and they deliver decent comfort and performance for the price. Shop REI Trailmade Pants

My personal recommendation

If I could only keep one pair of hiking pants for the rest of my photography adventures, it would be the KUHL Renegade. The stretch, fitted tapered look, durability, sun protection, and comfortable fabric feel are unmatched for long active days on the trail. Like I said I own five pairs.

Common questions about hiking pants

Are KUHL Renegade pants worth it?

Yes. For landscape photographers and anyone who spends long days on the trail they are one of the best all-around pants you can buy in 2026.

What are the best hiking pants for hot weather?

The KUHL Renegade, Patagonia Quandary, and REI Trailmade all breathe well, but the Renegade's stretch and quick-dry fabric win for me.

Hiking pants vs shorts — which should you wear?

I wear pants most days for sun protection and pockets. I switch to shorts on the hottest days.

Do hiking pants need to be waterproof?

Water-resistant (DWR finish) is enough for most trips. Full waterproof is overkill unless you are in constant rain.

Are budget hiking pants durable?

Some last surprisingly, but the KUHL Renegade gives you noticeably better longevity for only a small price difference in the long run. They are built to last.
