Anza Borrego Superbloom

During a rare superbloom, the Anza Borrego desert comes alive with a myriad of vibrant wildflowers.

The Anza Borrego superbloom did not disappoint. After an unusually rainy winter in California, Anza Borrego Desert State Park experienced its first major superbloom since 2017. Few sights are more unforgettable than brilliant colors stretching for miles across normally dry sandy flats, filling the air with fragrance and drawing visitors from near and far.

While photographing fragrant pink sand verbena with mountains in the background, I discovered delicate white evening primroses. I carefully arranged the two wildflowers together, racing

against time to capture the moment before sunset. Then to my delights the clouds lite up soft pinks and purples perfectly paring with the pink verbena. Every step was a challenge as I sank into sand and avoided hidden rabbit holes, but it only added to the thrill.

Superblooms like this are rare, happening roughly every ten years. Witnessing this transformation firsthand was awe-inspiring. Capturing it in a photograph preserves that fleeting beauty and brings the vivid colors of Anza Borrego's superbloom straight to your phone or onto your wall space.
