Seascapes
The best view in Malibu in my opinion is out at Point Dune. When I heard there was going to be a good sunset I went out to one of my favorite local spot. It was even better when I heard the yellow coresposis were in bloom. Of course this would be the perfect location as I attempted to capture the sunset. And sure enough the light went wild as the sky went alaze with color and by far one of the best sunsets I've witnessed. We had the best view in Malibu with the Malibu coastline framed by some coresposis and and sunset light. I still can't believe
That afternoon I drove to Corona Del Mar for sunset. With the 100 degree temperatures we've been having in Southern California I though it was a good time to take a Sunday drive and head for the beach. I ended up at a place I've been wanting to photograph for some time and that was Corona Del Mar. The last time I was here I was scuba diving and lost my keys but that's another story. Anyways I can't believe how nice it is down there and especially the coast. I made my way down to the beach and found a great dinosaur looking rock with some splashing waves. The tide was pretty high so that kept me against the cliff trying to stay dry. The sunset was amazing and lasted for a good amount of time that I lost track. Arguably Corona Del Mar in one of Orange Counties premier locations for photography and shooting sunset. What a great end of the weekend!
Sunset at El Matador Beach is my favorite locations to photograph sunsets in Malibu. El Matador Beach is unique and looks more like something from the Oregon Coast that California. After a long weekend, I was debating whether to shoot sunset. I just wanted to go home and take a nap but I couldn't help but stare at the clouds. This potentially could be a decent sunset or it could be a bust. I consulted with my buddy and he looked it up and said it was a 50% change of a burn. A 50% chance is a 50% chance! So I picked up my friend and headed out for sunset at El Matador Beach. Sure enough the sky lite up on fire as I was running around trying to photograph this incredible sunset. Love it when that happens!
El Matador beach, in my opinion, is the most scenic beach in Southern California. It is little north of the famous Zuma beach on the Pacific Coast Hwy in Malibu. There are collection of sea stacks, caves and rock formations which make this beach unique, something that you would normally expect off the Oregon Coastline. The sea stacks and caves make for amazing photos. That afternoon, I checked the conditions and it looked favorable for a decent sunset. So, I headed down the 101 to Malibu to El Matador. When I arrived at El Matador, I realized the tide was high. The only problem with the high tide was there would be plenty of wave action against the cliffs. But took my chances and found my favorite sea stack. To my surprise, the clouds began lighting up in the sky in the richest of hues. That night at El Matador had the best sunset, the type photographer's envy.
Malibu sunsets are some of the best in Southern California. The Pacific Coast Hwy winds along the edge to where the Santa Monica Mountains meet the Pacific Ocean, cutting through the glamorous town of Malibu, allowing for some spectacular coastline and amazing sunsets. That Malibu sunset was one of most incredible I’ve seen that year. Since there were wildflowers, I opted to head back to Malibu to one of my favorite spots out at Point Dume. Upon arriving I was excited to see that sure enough the yellow coreopsis was blooming! The whole hillside along the cliff overlooking the Malibu coastline were blooming with yellow flowers. Then as the sun set, the sky blew up in an incredible display of pastel colors as the sunset started. I rushed to edge of the cliff and scurried down a bit to capture this fresh arrangement of coreopsis as a foreground with a sweeping view of Pacific Ocean. I was photographing the sets of waves crashing into the beach as I noticed a whale swimming around the cove to top it off. To date that Malibu sunset was one of best I’ve photographed and experienced.
The sea cave at El Matador beach is a challenge and an experience to photograph. To photograph the sea cave at El Matador requires the perfect conditions: the tide must be low, there can’t be a marine layer and it needs to be a decent sunset to get a good photo of the sea cave at El Matador. I was so excited to arrive at El Matador seeing the conditions were ideal. The clouds were fantastic, and the tide was low. As the tide was going out, we made my way into the famous sea cave of El Matador, set up our tripods and photographed as the show begin. It's not an easy task shooting with your back against the wall as the waves pounded, splashing and the tripod shifting in the sand. But it was an incredible experience! And the colors that that night were perfect.
While living in Los Angeles I had the opportunity to go to so many beaches and I have to say that Malibu beach is the best especially for photos. Arguably, Malibu has some of the best beaches in Southern California. Just a few miles from busy and overfilled Santa Monica, there's nothing like a drive to a Malibu beach or just along the Pacific Coast Hwy. Beautiful climate, gorgeous beach, you feel at ease right away and all worries wash away with the waves. With all the rain and stormy skies I thought it would be a great afternoon to photograph the beach. Sure enough the sky exploded in color as the sunset began. Even though it was crowded I was happy to find a new spot.
El Matador State Beach is my favorite beach in Los Angeles county. You would think it was in Oregon or somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. The beach has long stretches of sand, sea caves and massive rocks. We went out to capture the sunrise at the El Matador State Beach but the surf was so high that it forced us to take shots against the cliffs. The good thing was it forced you to come up with different compositions. El Matador is my favorite local spot to shoot when i go to the beach. Even when the tide is high or you get skunked you can come away with a decent photograph.
Malibu for sunrise was the plan. My alarm went off at 4am as I drove to Malibu for sunrise. Earlier I received a forecast saying the sunrise at Malibu was going to be good. I drank a gallon of coffee, grabbed my camera and headed out to Malibu. What a burn. The colors were amazing. I'm still in awe of that morning. Malibu for sunrise is worth getting up early for!

The Santa Monica Mountains are a great place to experience a sunset. It was a long week so on Friday evening I was ready to go home. Unfortunately the clouds were looking decent so I called up my buddy to see if he wanted to shoot sunset. We headed to the Santa Monica Mountains to see if we could get some fog rolling in over the Santa Monica Mountains. Sure enough the marine layer was coming in. It was pretty amazing to watch the sun illuminate the layers of mountains and fog.
This is one of favorite Malibu photographs from over the years. This was one of those mornings that I love taking photographs of Malibu. The light was the best I’ve ever seen. I focused in on this one sea stack and shot away. Nothing beats an amazing sunrise when the sky goes crazy. I can’t wait to enlarge this for my wall.
El Matador is a not so hidden secret on the California Coast north of Los Angeles. For some reason along El Matador beach you can find several sea stacks that broke off and eroded from the nearby cliff making for some dynamic compositions. That December afternoon I headed down the El Matafor beach to shoot the winter sunset. Sure enough the sky lite up in the most incredible sunset I've seen. The burn lasted for at least a half an hour allowing for me plenty of time to capture the beautiful colors and hues. This was taken as the show was about over! I found this amazing sea stack with some cormorant enjoying the sunset as well. You can see why El Matador Beach is one of best locations in Los Angeles to photograph sunsets.
